How does one define self-Esteem?

A solid self-esteem definition seems a bit hard to pin down.  The definitions I’ve found vary quite a bit according to where I’ve found them. Lots of us have our own understanding of the concept. My idea of self-esteem is how I regard myself. It’s an evaluation or valuation which I place upon myself.  So many of the definitions that I found have an evaluation already attached to them.  They define inflated self-esteem or overly high self-esteem, and present self-esteem as a negative trait. An example is the synonym “narcissism”  Everyone has self-esteem whether it’s high or low ... everyone.  So what, we’re all narcissists? Another one is “conceit”.  We’re all conceited? Google’s definition of self-esteem is: confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect”. Some synonyms (that I agree with) are: self-regard self-confidence self-respect self-assurance These also have degrees associated with them ex. low self-confidence or a high level of self- confidence.

I agree with the following self-esteem definition because it doesn’t involve a level of self-esteem: “Self esteem is a personal judgment of worthiness that is expressed in the attitudes we hold about ourselves”. ~ Stanley Coopersmith The following quote is from Wikipedia “Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as an enduring personality characteristic ("trait" self-esteem), though normal, short-term variations ("state" self-esteem) also exist. Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include: self-worth, self-regard, self-respect, and self-integrity.” My desire is to help people with low self-esteem raise their self-esteem to healthy (and happy) levels by raising our levels of self-compassion. So what is self-compassion? Wikipedia says: “Self-compassion is extending compassion to one's self in instances of perceived inadequacy, failure, or general suffering.” The term self-compassion is so new that I can’t find it in any dictionaries, but it is what I’ve always considered healthy self-esteem.
