Poor Self-image Comes From Inside

I’m sure that you Heard the quote: “sticks and stones may break my bones, but, words will never hurt me”. That kind of sums it all up. Usually, t’s what you allow yourself to believe that messes up your head, not what people say.

Childhood Abuse Can Cause Low

Self-Image

Some people get put down by their parents at extremely young ages, and many of them (not all), are negatively influenced by it. The effect of this verbal abuse is difficult to overcome when they become adults, because, when they were exposed to it, they only had a child’s perspective. Often this leads to fearful and shy children who become targets of other kids because of it. This again can reinforce low self-esteem.

Self-esteem and Peer Pressure

Some people are different from others that they consider their peers.  Being of a different race, nationality, religious belief, sexual orientation or appearance can make a person conclude that they don’t measure up, and aren’t worthy. If you are prejudiced against because of the difference can compound the effect.

Lack of Loving Behavior or Affection in Childhood

Children that grew up in homes where they weren’t shown much love, caring and compassion also tend to have low self-esteem.  The reasoning being that “if I was better, Mom and Dad would surely let me know”.

Low Self-Esteem Can Develop in Adulthood

Sometimes negative beliefs about oneself are caused later in life, by such things as abusive relationships, bullies at work or school, lingering difficulties or worries, and trauma. Comparing one’s appearance to the media’s portrayal of beauty extremely affects many women. As long as we feel that we don’t measure up to others or our own perfectionist attitudes we can become a victim of poor self-image.  More information about low self-esteem Self-esteem Articles What is Self-esteem Signs of Low Self-esteem
